I only need one (1) icon, not 38! Since I had first CD burner (2x Mitsumi CD drive) I used Nero for my burning need. Like half of the world, I never paid for the software, just got a OEM licence from a friend or cracked it. I never liked Nero much, but other software was even worse. Last couple of months the Nero guys really made a mess out of their flagship product. It installs several million thing, most of which I don't use and will never run. Nero 7 Premium installs 38 icons in your start menu! WTF?!

So what to do? Well, it's 21st century. CD/DVD burning isn't high-tech anymore so it's time to take a look at free / open source alternatives. And that's exactly what I have been doing for last couple of months. Since I'm not a heavy burner it took long time to test couple of programs and I'm happy to report I have found what I've been looking for!

First, let's make it clear what I need from a burning app:

  • image burning (.img & .iso)
  • regular (Joilet) files burning (like mp3 or divx for DVD player, archiving)
  • DVD-Video burning (for those rare times I burn a DVD copy to DVD+R)
  • dual layer recording (even rarer)

Not required, but it's nice to have:

And some general requirements that I force on all of tools that I use. Not required, but is a major plus:

  • it's nice that program is portable (no installation, so I can have it in my Tools folder and automatically synced across all of my machines)
  • active development is a big plus

These are free CD/DVD burning programs I tested:

CDBurnerXP Pro
http://www.cdburnerxp.se/

CDBurnerXP Pro was my first free CD/DVD burning app. Worked quite well, but missed some features, DVD-video burning and disc-copy to name just two. The biggest offence is that it's not been updated since 2004. In computer year that's about a 70 regular years which is just too much. And the name - well, it's so 1990's!

It was time to look further.

DeepBurner Free Version
http://www.deepburner.com/?r=products&pr=provsfree

A friend pointed my to DeepBurner and it was a step forward. Also did OK job as a burner. It's rock solid, works nice, but it's also kind of out of date. Feature-wise it's very similar to CDBurnerXP Pro lacking same "advanced" features. Good thing is that actually has a special portable edition which is cool. I had some issues though. Sometimes it finalized a multi session disc but when I didn't want it to. Not a big deal, but it's annoying.

I used it a long time, but never really liked it, so I kept looking.

InfraRecorder
http://infrarecorder.sourceforge.net/

I really like the minimalism of InfraRecorder. It has all the feature I want, even disc-copy. Plus points are that it's open source, that comes packed as installer and as zip (portable is good, remember) and there is a x64 build. Not that I can use it, but it's cool. It also looks quite nice.

The architecture is somewhat different, since the program uses some opensource command line utils to do (part?) of the job. Why not, if it works. My GetCanon uses same tricks.

But it never worked for me. Kept crashing under Vista. I just read that the latest version fixes that so I'm giving it another chance.

ImgBurn
http://www.imgburn.com

I don't remember how I came across ImgBurn, but I do remember it wasn't intentional. The history of it is rather interesting as it started as a DVD decripter, a DVD-Video copying program that is now a history. But the burning engine evolved in ImgBurn that is a fantastic piece of software. Since ImgBurn's main feature is image burning (as the name suggest), it's UI is somewhat different from every other burning software on the planet, but once you get it it's not bad at all (hint: go to "Mode" menu and select "Build" if you want to add files to your compilations, burn DVD-Video etc). Some of the features are not very obious, but probably are there. If you can't seem to find it, just google it!

So far I don't have anythig that didn't work or that I miss. It doesn't come in zip or other portable format, but you can easily unzip an installation .exe itself (works with 7zip, haven't tested with others). It also lacks disc-copy feature but you can always burn an image, change the disc and burn back. The days that we hade two CD's in machines and copied CDs are kind of gone, right?

Conclusion

I have two of these in my tools folder. ImgBurn and InfraRecorder. Both get the job done, but if could just use one, I would go for ImgBurn.

In this last year, having using Windows Vista, I don't remember I ever had a need for a specific burning SW. For me, it's just - insert a blank CD/DVD, choose to format it, copy files, eject... Plain and simple... But before that, in its good days, it was Nero...

# re: Free CD & DVD burning software 3/26/2007 7:51 AM Robi
As far as I know, there is a problem with all software (except Nero) burning DVD video - it plays fine on PC, but doesn't play at all in regular (maybe a bit older) DVD players.

I tried almost everything when I was using Windows, but only Nero worked (OK, excpet Roxio products etc.).

# re: Free CD & DVD burning software 3/26/2007 8:41 AM Luka
I was searching for open source or at least free burning software for some time. OK, Windows XP is capable of burning, but somehow I have several cases that important data was magically lost (a friend tried to get some presentations from work so he could review them at home, but instead he enjoyed a nice sunny weekend). CDBurnerXP Pro was fine, but... Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't, no DVD support... Am stuck with Nero until I find better solution. Will try the ones you mentioned! TNX

# re: Free CD & DVD burning software 3/26/2007 9:32 AM David
@Andrej: Vista is ok if you just burn files. If you try to burn something that's not going to be used on PC it's not enough.

@Robi: ImgBurn burned DVD-Video ok for me on Vista and PC. It played ok in 1 year old DVD player. Didn't test it on older ones, though.

@Luka: Glad I could help. Report back how it works for you!

# re: Free CD & DVD burning software 3/26/2007 10:11 AM Dietmar
I even BOUGHT Nero, as it was quite good for a long time (at least in my opinion). I spent almost 70€ to notice that:
1) Nero 6 (?) doesn't let you create ISO-images any more. You may burn them, but you can only create Nero-images
2) I tried to make MP3s out of an audio CD and noticed, that they want extra money for their MP3-codec. WTF?? 70 bucks and the MP3 thing isn't included - bastards. I took CDEX istead.

Trenutno uporabljam DeepBurner in mi je čisto v redu. Če bom kdaj potreboval kaj drugega bom pa iskal naprej.

@Miha: Tnx. Tudi tega sem srečal, a nikoli poskusil.

# Re: Free CD & DVD burning software 3/27/2007 10:54 AM Andrej Tozon
David, the only thing I can't burn with Vista (and would actually need to), are (ISO) images; whenever I need those, i simply mount them as an additional drive...

# re: Free CD & DVD burning software 3/28/2007 9:05 AM Miha Markic
@Andrej: Deamon Tools, eh :-)

# re: Free CD & DVD burning software 3/28/2007 9:06 AM Miha Markic
Ehm, I mean Daemon Tools.

# re: Free CD & DVD burning software 3/28/2007 9:11 AM David
Daemon Tools lost me when they too started to include various shitty software in their install. For some time they have been on the edge of spyware hell...

# Re: Free CD & DVD burning software 3/28/2007 7:40 PM Andrej Tozon
There's also Microsoft's ightweight Virtual CD-ROM Control Panel [found it once on MSDN downloads]. Apparently, it continues to run under Vista... Easy to install, easy to run and mount images.

# re: Free CD & DVD burning software 4/1/2007 10:01 PM FaKe
You can always use Nero 6, which is by far still (!!!) the best burning software. Better than the shitty v7.
It works wonders for me and I don't need anything else. Except maybe for making images other than .nrg and mounting stuff, but that's another plane altogether.
Peace out.

Nice job! I found your page for exactly the same reasons you gave.

DVD videos: DVD+ is not endorsed by the DVD Commitee (or whatever their name is) only DVD- is. Therefore many desktop DVD player don't play them. Not even if it was burnt with Nero.

Thanks for the page !

# re: Free CD & DVD burning software 4/8/2007 1:26 PM David
@Bill: Glad you like it. Come back for more. I'm gonna do more articles on similar subjects (free archivers, free ipod managers...)

# re: Free CD & DVD burning software 4/16/2007 1:20 AM Movie Freak
Nice article. I need to find some free image-burning tools for a friend of mine using windows. I'm in the middle of a slow transition to Linux, and I've been doing my burning in Linux for a while now, so I sort of lost touch with what's new in windows for cd/dvd burning software. This was a nice little run-down that you gave. Thanks for taking the time to do this.

A nice roundup, mate. It has saved me a lot of time as your site was easy to find in Google. You're right about Nero ... and the product descriptions on their website are as clear as mud these days, too.

My father, who's the one in need of the software, is going to try out CDBurnerXP Pro as it seems pretty straight forward, which is exactly what he needs lol. (Personally, I use Linux... K3B works like a dream.)

Thank you, mate.

# re: Free CD & DVD burning software 5/6/2007 10:57 PM David
@Paul: Glad I could help. Comments like this keep this site up and running!

Good luck to your father!

And what would you do if the old nero doesnt support your new dvd writer?

Been using Sonic Recordnow for about a year, free oem software with PC. Used a Tesco DVD-R the other day to burn a film onto and it come up saying that disc could not be burnt. I was using the exact copy option which makes a temp file on hard drive, read original fine, inserted Blank DVD-R and it said disc could not be burnt, so exited sonic recordnow and now Ive lost 4gb of hard drive space, where the f**k has that gone. Ive looked everywhere I can think of on hard drive, but having no luck. Anyone got a suggestion where this 4gb has been lost? Be very glad for any help on this, cheers. Richard

Newest Nero version works like a charm.. you DO have a choice to not install all that extra software.. Nero is, and will always be the best piece of burning-software.. for me that is... have a mac? check out Burn, which is GREAT, and lightweight=)
you can find it at www.freemacware.com

Good stuff! Used Nero for years, but it doesn't like my new pioneer DVD burner. Tried uninstalling, cleaning and reg check with their tools and reinstalling. Lost drivers that I needed, ended up with two copies of some of their programs, blown away 9 discs in the process. Gutted because of my many compilations (130) saved on Nero, but definitely time to move on. Glad I didn't opt for the free upgrade to Nero 7 - 176,124kb on a slow dial-up connection and petrol generator! Would have been time consuming and expensive crap! Cheers.

I want to install Nero 6.... but at a certain moment the system asks me for a serial number.
Where can I get that or/and how can I go "arround" this problem?
thanks for helping me out

I also have tried to use NERO 6.0 and 7.0....neither are compatible to with Vista.

If you have MS Windows Vista or any other Windows version, I suggest you folks try "Free Easy CD DVD Burner". This program works GREAT!! It gives you the ability to Copy CD/DVD, burn WAV, WMA, MP3, OGG, FLAC, AAC, M4A, and ISO9660 Joliet standard. It also supports buffer underrun and mulitsession disks.

Found this program under www.downloads.com . ENJOY!!

Glad I found this page - was a life saver. Windows DVD burner (vista) wouldn't create a DVD on the new PC - i chunked 4 discs before I googled for a better alternative. You popped up early in the search, and your run down on software was invaluable. I ended up going with ImgBurn and it worked like a champ. Very happy - nice work on the research, thanks!
